I am Better Today Because …

My friends over at TwitterMom’s always have some fun contests and inspire all sort of different blog post ides. Today’s inspiration comes from one of their latest contests Celebrate the Things in Your Life that Are Better Than Ever. They teamed up with Dove gofresh and they are offering some great prizes to participants. You should also check out Dove’s photo contest on Facebook where you can submit a “before” photo and a “now” photo in one of the four categories (play, love, life and style) and tell them how your life is better than ever for your chance to win a spa weekend getaway, cash prizes and more!

As for me, today my life is better than ever because of my relationship with Christ Jesus! Growing up I had always attended church and participated in different activities with the church so Christ has always been in my life. But it wasn’t until I got married and moved to Maryland that I really started to have a relationship with Christ. Since then all aspects of my life have changed. I have been blessed beyond measure in my career, finances, family, health and marriage. God’s presences in my life truly makes a difference and I know I am a better person today because of it.

Getting Fit After the Holidays

I can feel it already. I am going to have a hard time come the first of the year to shed off all the extra pounds put on over the holiday’s by snacking. I had a blast making all those cookies, but my down fall started when I didn’t give them all away. Temptation was way too strong … I indulged a bit.

Well thanks to the creative minds at TwitterMom’s I have been inspired to come up with 10 different ways to get fit after the holidays. And who knows, I may be lucky and get chosen to win a copy of EA SPORTS Active™ Personal Trainer– the highest rated Wii™ fitness product to date for use on the Nintendo Wii system! You know how I love me some Wii Fitness.

Continued Intake of Fluids: I already mentioned before how important and beneficial drinking loads of water can be on your health and well being. Staying fit is one of its greater benefits and I plan on drinking a lot this coming year.

Increase Fruit & Veggie Intake: Fruits and vegetables are a natural source of energy and give the body many nutrients you need to keep going. There is a whole CDC website dedicated just to the benefits of consuming more fruits and veggies.

Limiting Sweets: This is probably the hardest stay fit method of all. I usually can’t go a day without eating something sweet like a cookie, or ice cream. I just need to learn how to slow it down a bit. You can treat yourself with an ‘unhealthy’ treat just once in two weeks if you find it difficult to control

Limit caffeine:Unlike sweets, this one is the easiest for me. I don’t drink coffee and I don’t like caffeinated sodas. But this is just about me. You also, avoid smoking or exposure to even passive smoking. Smoking tends to weaken your muscle strength. Also, avoid regular intake of alcohol

Planning out my Meals: Not only is what you put into your body important, but the when is also just as crucial.  The intake should be based on your activity and not on your mood. People often tend to eat more in excitement and even in tension.

Regularly Take Vitamins: make sure that you do take a daily vitamin and mineral supplements for total health

Exercise Regularly: Well this one is a no brain-er. CDC also provides a wonderful site that teaches about regular exercise and the types needed. Physical activity is anything that gets your body moving. According to the 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, you need to do two types of physical activity each week to improve your health–aerobic and muscle-strengthening.

Staying Active:  If you can’t fit in your full amount of regular exercise one week make sure you are continuing to do stuff around the house, yard, work place or town to keep your body moving. Don’t become a couch potato. Get up and do something. Even the laundry, the dishes, rake the leaves, shovel some snow … something to get your body moving.

Keep a purposeful focus on the goal: No amount planning and dreaming matters if your heart really isn’t in it. Staying fit is like any other project … you have to stay focused. And you have to believe the changes and steps you are making are worth it. Purposefully decide to do all the above … fully understanding the benefits and you will see results in no time.

Track my progress:  This is a personal benefit for me so I kept it last. Not everyone will have the same effect but I love to see my progress laid out before me. It encourages me to keep it up. Track your weight loss, the amount of time spent doing regular exercise, waist size, steps walked … anything you can track to keep you motivated.

Hope these help to motivate you to stay fit and trim for the new year. Have any other tips you would like to share?

A New Christmas

This year my husband and I feel that we should be doing more to give back to our community and those in need. We have been brain storming for different ideas of activities we can get involved in between now and the New Years.

My husband has already starting acting out on his giving spirit. Just this past weekend he stopped and took time to donate blood to the Central Florid Blood Bank. They had a bus parked outside at the Waterford Lakes Town Center. I wish I could have given also but I had just come down with a cold and you can’t give when you are sick and taking medications.

Some other ideas we have come up with so far include:

  • Volunteering in a soup kitchen
  • Visiting a nursing home for an evening, and
  • Donating close and food to the homeless.

Since we ourselves are not in a sound financial situation, I have no income and my husband makes just above minimum wage we are trying to find stuff we can do that spends our time and effort not so much the money. We aren’t trying to be selfish, we want to be creative and known there are ways to serve our community without spending the little funds we have.

My friends at TwitterMoms provided another simple way to give back this year. Check out the Robeez Web site and get a pair of Robeez Soft Soles. For every pair of Robeez Soft Sole purchases, stride rite will donate that pair to K.I.D.S (Kids In Distressed Situations), through December 23rd. K.I.D.S brings hope and self-esteem to children in need and their families by providing new clothes, shoes, toys, furniture, books and juvenile products donated by leading manufacturers and retailers. The donations move through their network of community social service agencies in the U.S. and abroad to reach children who are ill, living in poverty, or are the victims of natural disasters. My little one isn’t old enough yet but I saw these and may get them and keep them for next year when he will be ready. You can check out more details on the website and

As we participate in each act of service this holiday season I will be sure to document our experience and share them with you all.

What is something you can do to make this Christmas special for someone. If you have any suggestions for other activities we could possible do in the Central Florida area let us know.

The Most Surprising Gift I've Ever Received

As I prepare for the holiday season and start to activate my holiday shopping plan I am taking a break to stop and  reflecting on the gifts that I have received in the past. My husband is the shy type, until you get to know him, then he opens up. So if you ask him now he will be bashful and say he isn’t the greatest gift giver … he would say he isn’t creative. Oh but he is. Some of my favorite gifts ever have come from him.

The most surprising gift I have ever received came from him years before we were married. While we were dating one of our favorite activities to do together was to play video games … for hours. That particular holiday season there were several video games that were going to be released that I really wanted to play. Some he like himself so he talked about playing them also. Which I figured worked out for him because they were Microsoft Xbox games, and he owned the Xbox, not me. So more then likely the games would be at his house anyway, and I would only play them when I went to visit.

Needless to say on Christmas morning we began to exchange gifts. We got each other several gifts, two of which were the games I wanted. Yeah for me. Well after we were finished he said …”now wait, we are missing something.” He left the room and came back with a slightly larger present. To my surprise, he had went and bought me my very own xbox. I think I reacted very similar to the Nintendo Kid video. I was happy.

What is your most surprising gift ever? You can share your experience here with me and also check out TwitterMoms to find out how you can earn some Target holiday cash of your own by sharing your story.

Staples & Twitter Mom's: How to Save Money This Christmas

TwitterMom’s and Staples have joined forces and are encouraging mom’s to be creative and penny wise this holiday season by coming up with ways to still get the gifts but be smart about it.

My first step to saving money this year is to be organized. I started my list of gifts for each person. I know what I am getting everyone in my family ahead of time. That way I won’t be tempted and stray away while shopping.

Next I will hit the stores, but not to buy anything. I will go to at least 3 different stores to bargin window shop. See who has each item and who has the best price. It usually takes me at least a week to do this but it is worth it.

Third, I coupon hunt. Even though I already know which store is the best, it doesn’t hurt to have an extra 30% OFF coupon with me.

Fourth and finally. I do all my shopping in one day and get it over with. No looking back, no second guessing. I also wrap them all the same day also. It feels so rewarding at the end of the night knowing both shopping and wrapping are all done.

Here’s a tip to help other mom’s with kids in school or working from home. Need some school or office supplies check out the Staples Holiday Savings section. www.staples.com/holidaysavings Great Deals!
